The article discusses the main approaches to defining the concept of «digital economy». The role of
digital technologies in the modern economy is noted. Areas of interaction between traditional and intellectual and information resources in the process of meeting material and non-material needs are defined. The boundaries of
the non-material sphere of the economy are marked, on the basis of which the essence and features of the digital
economy are clarified. With the vast amount of information on aspects of the digital economy and its future
applications, much of the literature is devoted to a variety of perspectives on development and use. However,
at the moment, the theoretical issues related to the impact of digital processes on economic activity using the
categorical apparatus are not sufficiently covered, and therefore the theoretical analysis of the digital economy
is significantly complicated. Therefore, it becomes obvious that it is necessary to formulate a generally accepted
definition of the digital economy, which must meet certain requirements.
